Chapter 1

Vision and Goals for Standards-Based Arts Education

Chapter 1 establishes a vision and goals for arts education in California and engages in discussion of the role of the arts in cognitive, social, cultural, and emotional development. After establishing the goal for standards based arts education in California, which is to develop artistic literacy, the chapter previews key concepts such as The California Arts Standards, Preparing Students for Careers, Opportunity to Learn criteria, Inclusive Arts Education, that later chapters will discuss in depth.  Brief discussions about state and federal policy and connections with other standards follow.
