Discover the Arts in STEAM Workshops held on August 3rd
This series of three workshops for Region 2 extended learning staff and administrators and K-8 teachers, was part of the annual 2-day STEAM conference of Region 2 Expanded Learning Services now in its 17th year. For the first time BCOE’s VAPA program was invited to develop one day of STEAM workshops with an emphasis on arts. We marketed the arts workshop series separately to K-8 teachers but attendees to the 2-day conference also attended these workshops. Our goal was to increase the audience for the conference while exposing a new audience to arts integration. Great success was achieved in reaching a new audience for arts integration since 90% of the participants were from after-school programs representing multiple counties (Tehama, Shasta, Glenn, Butte).
The workshops of Harlan Brownlee, a national teaching artist were highly participatory. He grounded the class in the language of dance (time, space, body, energy) and taught multiple strategies combining movement with science or other subjects with an emphasis on choreography. Cris Guenter, retired and nationally recognized arts education professor, taught animation using an easy Smart phone application with tips on creating a green screen with a pizza box and a tripod with egg cartons. Participants were coached to create at least one short video.
Professional Learning for Teaching Artists
This hybrid program will include zoom sessions, online learning modules, and in person coaching presented by Focus 5, a consulting group that offers services for arts educators nationwide. The two components of the program will be Lesson Design and Residency Planning.

Madera County Superintendent of Schools
Madera County ArtsFest is a fun and free community festival promoting art and was sponsored by Madera County Superintendent of Schools, and the Madera County Schools Foundation. The event was held on May 13th and featured free face painting, hands-on art activities, snow cones, and popcorn. There was also a performance from the Ezequiel Tafoya Alvarado Academy’s mariachi band. This year 469 students from 40 schools in Madera County competed in an art contest and all artwork was displayed in the student art gallery. Projects that were displayed included: decorating flower pots and paper bags, drawing on tambourines and necklaces, swirling pool paintings, and creating chalk murals. The children were also encouraged to work with their parents to draw a scene on a puzzle together. Students competed in separate divisions: K-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade. The pieces were judged in separate categories: 2-dimensional art, 3-dimensional art and still photography. Dr. Cecilia Massetti, Madera County Superintendent of Schools, said “This is a fantastic event! There are no admission costs and we are happy to provide free make-and-take activities for the community. It’s a fun day to come out with the family, to celebrate the arts and to engage in different types of art experiences.”

Fresno County Superintendent of Schools
Fresno County Rural Theatre Collaborative
The Fresno County Rural Theatre Collaborative (RTC) is an initiative of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools made possible through generous support of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The goal of the RTC is to increase equitable access to high quality theatre programs in rural high schools across Fresno County. 40 students and 4 teachers from the RTC’s year 1 cohort traveled to Ashland, OR for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Over the course of 4 days in Ashland the students were able to see 5 phenomenal productions: “Kinky Boots,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Three Musketeers,” “Rent,” and “Twelfth Night.” In addition to attending the shows, students were able to tour the production venues and attend pre- and post-show talkbacks with cast and production team members. The RTC Year 1 Cohort consisted of Fowler High School, Riverdale High Schools, Sanger High School, and Sanger West High School.
In addition to the trip, schools in the RTC have the opportunity to work with FCSS Arts Education Content Specialist, Joel Abels. Mr. Abels, an exemplary theatre educator and leader, provides 4 days of in-class instructional coaching and program/production consultation support for each of the teachers and schools in the cohort. 4 more rural high schools will be added to the RTC in the 2023-2024 school year.
Participation in the RTC is 100% FREE for students and schools thanks to the collaboration between FCSS and the Hewlett Foundation.

Poetry Live!
The Tulare County Office of Education and the Arts Consortium (Tulare County’s Arts Council) are proud to present Poetry Live! This program is a new series of events that offers students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to not only recite poems written by great poets but to write and recite their own original works as well. Poetry Live will feature three events that students can choose to participate in: Poetry Out Loud, Poetry Out Loud Junior and Poet’s Own Voice. For more information on Poetry Live visit: https://tcoe.org/PoetryLive.
- Poetry Out Loud is a national event for high school students (grades 9-12) and is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Students participating in this event will choose three pieces from the Poetry Out Loud archive to recite in front of a live audience. Participating schools will hold their own competition in December or early January. They will crown their school champion who will move on to the Tulare County Poetry Out Loud event and compete for the county title.
- New this year, the Poetry Out Loud experience is being offered to middle school students (grades 6-8) in the Poetry Out Loud Junior event. Students participating in this event will choose three pieces from the Poetry Foundation archive of poems to recite in front of a live audience. Participating schools will hold their own competition in December or early January and send their school champion to the county competition, where a student will be crowned the county champion.
- The final event in the Poetry Live family is Poet’s Own Voice. This event is open to middle school and high school students (grades 6-12). There are two ways to participate. The first is a written event in which students submit five original works. Judges will determine the top piece from each student, as well as rank all pieces to determine the top three poems overall. In the showcase portion of the event, students can choose to recite their top original work in front of an audience. From the showcase event, the first-ever Tulare County Youth Poet Laureate will be crowned.

In addition to multiple performances and concerts, highlights this year included performing with Joyce DiDonato and the Eden Project in January, the performance in this summer’s La Boheme, directed by Mo Zhou and conducted by Daniela Candillari, and last week’s concert – a collaboration with the Young People’s Chorus of New York (YPC) conducted by Francisco Núñez, which featured the world premier of Tides, a commissioned work by Nia Imani Franklin. Sign-ups for the 23-24 school year are underway, and we are expanding the program to an additional site while adding a middle school component.

Presenting Prop 28 Bootcamp at the Leadership Retreat in Mammoth Lakes
On August 1st, Region 10 Arts Lead, Louisa Higgins and Arts Consultant, Peggy Burt were invited up to the Leadership Retreat for Mono and Inyo Counties to present their Prop 28 Bootcamp. This opportunity was made possible via the supplemental funding provided by the Ca County Superintendents. The retreat was composed of 40 Superintendents, Principals and District Leaders from both counties. After the hour-long presentation about Prop 28 funding, newly updated to feature information from the trailer bill, the participants spent several hours working on strategic planning for the new funding.
The two rural counties are receiving relatively small amounts of money compared to some of the larger counties in Region 10 (Riverside and San Bernardino), however, they are deeply committed to the preparation and wise stewardship of the new funding. Louisa and Peggy felt energized and hopeful after their work with the group, who were motivated and intent on the equity of services they can provide with this new funding. Riverside County Office of Education is honored to be the Region 10 Arts Lead and to serve our sister counties. Thank you to Letty Kraus and the Ca County Superintendents for this wonderful opportunity!
