Welcome to Module 19: Developing Empathy and Understanding through World Music Grades K-12. This module will focus on using music as a lens through which we view the historical and cultural connections of people around the world and within our own communities to help students develop empathy and understanding. This module was developed by San Diego County Office of Education and Fresno County Superintendent of Schools in partnership with the Center for World Music.

Planning your professional learning (Content Outlines)
The following outlines can be used to break down your professional learning. These are all available under Downloads.
Section 1: The Elements of Music
The purpose is to provide resources for music and general ed classroom teachers to use music to broaden student’s world view. The goal is to reinforce both the need for discipline specific music and arts instruction as well as music and arts integrated instruction to benefit the whole child. Module 19 will explore the lives of people in other parts of the world by introducing students to the music that is part of their daily lives, rituals, and celebrations, while also introducing and reinforcing key music standards. Section 2: Empathy and the Elements of Music

Section 3: Culture and Music
The purpose of this section is to give an overview of culture from one of the lessons in the Module and connect culture to the elements of music used throughout the units of instruction.
